Dear Professor Dyson:

In conjunction with the centennial of the discover of the telephone, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in collaboration with American Telegraph and Telephone,
is organizing a workshop conference on the future of computing.
This study
is aimed
at a long range -- 10 to 20 years -- view on the development, applications and
impact of computers.
As you are
well known for your imaginative and sensible view of the long range facts, I
am writing to ask if you are interested in taking part. It would involve
a 7,500 word essay for which MIT would pay $2,000 and possibly participating
in a seminar at MIT the week of March 10, 1976 for which MIT could pay an
additional $500 plus travel and living expenses.

This letter is not a definite offer, which can be made only by Professor
Dartouzos of MIT, the study director. But the probability of invitation
is quite high if you are interested. As you see, the topic is not very
precisely defined and we hope that you will feel free to propose whatever
seems most interesting and useful.
